The Museum
Designed by world-renowned architect Kenzo Tange, the Yokohama Museum of Art is one of the most stunning pieces of architecture that came out of the development of the Minato Mirai 21 district of Yokohama. On November 3rd, 1989, the Yokohama Museum of Art officially opened its doors to the public.

The Yokohama Museum of Art looks like an impenetrable fortress from the outside. The inside, on the other hand, is all about space and light having been consciously designed to take advantage of natural light. 18 meters above the appropriately titled Grand Gallery is a glass ceiling with louvers to control the light. The art is displayed in themed galleries all of which provide ample space for you to relax and simply enjoy the art.
The Art
While the Yokohama Museum of Art has more than 9,000 works in its permanent collection there are only about 200 pieces on display at any one time. Exhibitions of the museum collection are held three times a year. The Yokohama Museum of Art collects and exhibits modern and contemporary art that is suitable for a modern port city with a strong international vibe.
The following are our policies for the planning and execution of our exhibitions.
- Exhibitions with a global perspective suitable for Yokohama as an international port city.
- Exhibitions which provide citizens opportunities to become more familiar with contemporary art and promote their understanding.
- Exhibitions of all kinds of photography from its beginning to now, organized with global perspectives; considering Yokohama's privileged status in the history of Japanese photography.
- Exhibitions of Japanese modern art and art related to Yokohama: works by artists patronaged by HARA Sankei and attempts to survey the development of both Western style painting and Nihonga since the Opening of Yokohama Port. Shows of the artists who were born or have lived in Yokohama and exhibitions of various aspects in the art history of Yokohama.
- Exhibitions of art forms closely related to our everyday life, such as architecture, decorative arts and design.
Note: There are four special exhibitions are held each year. The current exhibition is "Vivere a Pompei" and coming programs include masterpieces of Impressionists and Ecole de Paris from the Pola Museum of Art Collection as well as a retrospective exhibition of Edgar Degas.
